The Royal Moroccan Federation of Hockey was established in 1956 in Casablanca and acceded to the International Hockey Federation in 1957. It was in 1925 that hockey was introduced for the first time in Morocco thanks to the influx of many european players.
Hockey in Morocco has approximately 2500 practicing and 600 licensed competitors. Morocco has no less than 20 clubs affiliated to the FRMH (Royal Moroccan Federation of Hockey). The most successful clubs with the most titles in the history of the federation are: Ascoslydec, CNSS, RUC, WAC and RCA. Today 119 countries adhere to the FIH, whose headquarters are in Lausanne, Switzerland. The FIH manages, in particular, the World Cup and the Olympic games.
About Hockey in Morocco
If one were to mention the presence of the sport on television, the number of spectators attending matches, the budget allotted to FRMH or the number of licensed hockey players, then Hockey itself as a world sport may seem unfamiliar.
If we were to discuss the salary that is paid to the Moroccan National Team players while participating in international competitions, it is simply non-existent. Unlike football, it is far from a legitimate sports business.
If we must talk about doping in hockey, it does not get mentioned. It simply does not exist. Spectators are primarily parents and friends. They are still there after the game, all to celebrate the victory or to console the players in the defeat. These are the same friends and family that is transporting the players to an from matches, tracing the fields, sending letters and offering the financial support to ensure the team continues to play.
In short, it is far from the king’s ransom of other professional sports, or is it money to keep from welfare. There are other means of support and it is not an easy life for the hockey player. On the field, players play with a stick, but unlike the similar game of ice-hockey, there isn’t much protection worn.
The commitment is important but physical violence is not part of the spirit of the game. Here at FRMH, we talk about fair play. It’s a whole education. Finally, hockey is a real sport combining fitness, addresses individual technique and team spirit. So if you are a parent, it begs the question: what team sport should I choose for my son or my daughter? Think Hockey, your child will gain a whole new perspective and a new circle of friends. The FRMH has made great efforts to develop hockey in schools and to raise awareness of the sport, providing the incentive for young people to participate.
Hockey Throughout the World
For some countries like India or Pakistan, Hockey is the national sport. But closer to home, in Holland, it competes virtually on the same level as football. It is quite a popular sport indeed.
Hockey has been an Olympic discipline for a long time. The FIH organizes this and the Hockey World Cup as an international competition. In 2006, the Hockey World Cup was held in Monchengladbach, Germany for Men and in Madrid, Spain for Women. The FIH also organizes other international Hockey competitions.
